Durham’s store Salvation Army donation centre, which opened in 2023, is celebrating its second anniversary with a donation from local housebuilder, Barratt Homes, which has its Old Durham Gate development nearby.

The Salvation Army opened a second location in Durham just two years ago, and has made a huge impact since. Located within the Dragonville Retail Park, the centre offers furniture, electricals and everything that is available in its retail stores, but on a much larger scale. Since its opening, the centre has welcomed thousands of customers and donors who have bought and repurposed second-hand items. The Salvation Army has 56 donation centres across the UK. The focus for the Durham centre is community, affordability and repurposing items. Funds raised from the sale of items support the charity’s work.

The donation, which has come from nearby housing development, Barratt Homes Old Durham Gate, will go towards continuing the incredible work that the charity does all year round. This includes providing people who are homeless with a safe space to sleep, as well providing social enterprise training and donations that go towards food and warm clothing.

Donations are an important way to raise the necessary income needed to fund The Salvation Army charity, and ensure that it can continue with its efforts to support people across the whole of Durham. The £1,500 received from Barratt Homes’ Old Durham Gate development will play a big part towards this.

Andrew Wray, the Regional Sales Manager for the North branches of the Salvation Army, commented: “We would like to thank Barratt Homes for their generous donation to our charity in celebration of our centre’s second year in Durham. Donations are essential in helping us to support a wide array of people within the area, and the cold winter months are especially difficult for people who are homeless. We’d like to invite people to visit our donation centre in Durham to have a browse, and support those who are most vulnerable in the local community.”

Emily Watson, Sales Manager at Barratt Homes’ Old Durham Gate development, added:

“The Salvation Army achieves really fantastic work within the Durham community, and it’s wonderful to be able to support the newest donation centre in Dragonville Retail Park. We would like to encourage people to visit this donation centre to browse its goods, and if you are in a position to do so, to make a donation to their fantastic cause.”
