Plans for a new university data centre are set to be approved this week

Durham University has submitted a proposal for a new facility to host data and computing equipment, providing the infrastructure required for IT systems.

Durham County Council’s planning committee will consider the planning application on Friday after the plans were recommended for approval by planning officers.

The proposed Data Centre at Aykley Heads would house a supercomputer, a highly advanced computing machine designed for exceptionally fast data processing and complex calculations. Plans also show the facility would comprise a data hall housing the supercomputer, a public education space, offices, generators and a delivery bay.
