On Thursday 13th March 2025, NECIT Founder and Director Peter Lyons awarded winner of regional Inter-College Welding and Fabrication Competition Reece Hewick an ISO 9606-1 Welder Qualification Test.

Lyons, alongside Head of Non-Destructive Testing and ISO 9712 NDT Level 3 Liam Glenwright and NDT Apprentice Charlie Ould, was invited to the annual Inter-College Fabrication and Welding Competition hosted at Derwentside College, Consett. This year’s competition saw a record-breaking number of entries, with Level 2 and 3 full-time students and apprentices from South West Durham Training, Middlesbrough College, NETA Training, Newcastle College and Derwentside College all taking part.

The trainee welders were challenged to develop their skills in a competitive environment with their efforts then judged by an impartial team of experts - including Certified International & European Welding Engineer and NECIT Founder - to assess their knowledge and practical skills against a set of strict criteria.

The competition was close, with incredible talent showcased by all entrants, but ultimately South West Durham College student Reece Hewick came out on top.

Of the winner, Peter Lyons said: “I’ve seen a lot of potential from today’s competitors, and every one of them will be an asset within their chosen field. Today’s first prize serves as recognition of Reece’s capabilities as a welder, and our trust in his skills. We hope that this qualification will aid this future professional in his engineering career.”

NECIT is proud to support the development of the next generation of engineers with comprehensive welder and weld procedure qualification testing.
