A County Durham-based laser cleaning company, ISR, has played a key role in restoring a historic stone wall on Newcastle’s Town Moor, just in time for the city’s celebratory homecoming following Newcastle United’s recent cup victory. This wall was an eyesore to people travelling into the city from the airport and the A1 which feeds Newcastle city.
Specialising in precision laser cleaning for both engineering and civil sectors across the UK, ISR was called in after concerns were raised over unsightly graffiti defacing the 19th-century structure.
Unlike traditional cleaning methods such as pressure washing or shot blasting—which risk damaging the delicate cement between the natural stones—laser technology offered a safe, non-invasive solution. The use of chemicals was also ruled out due to the sensitivity of the surrounding natural environment, making laser cleaning the clear choice.
ISR’s two-man team completed the first phase which was 120 meters of damaged wall in just five days, using advanced equipment to carefully vaporise the graffiti without harming the underlying structure. The results have already made a visible difference, returning a sense of pride to a space enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
The timing couldn’t have been better. The final day of the first phase coincided with Newcastle’s dramatic cup win and the celebratory homecoming event held right on the Town Moor—thrusting the freshly restored wall, and the city, into the international spotlight.
ISR is expected to return to complete the project once additional funding is secured with local groups crowd funding as in phase one.
