Business Durham’s commitment to supporting its staff’s wellbeing has been recognised with the Workplace Health and Wellbeing Award at the Inspiring People Awards 2024.
This prestigious accolade celebrates teams and individuals dedicated to fostering a culture of care, and Business Durham’s Staff Engagement and Wellbeing (SEW) group has set an inspiring example.
Formed by 11 passionate volunteers, the SEW group initially served as Better Health at Work Advocates before taking on a more ambitious role in 2022. Following a staff survey that revealed 59% of respondents felt their work impacted their wellbeing, the group expanded its mission, creating a comprehensive wellbeing strategy tailored to the needs of their colleagues.
This self-directed group introduced a range of impactful initiatives, including:
A dedicated staff resources Teams channel: A hub of information and tools designed to help employees prioritise their mental and physical health.
An annual Wellbeing Day: A special event encouraging staff to step back from their daily routines and focus on self-care.
A quiet space: A designated area for quiet working and reflection, helping employees recharge during busy workdays.
What makes this achievement even more commendable is that the SEW group members implemented these initiatives alongside their regular job responsibilities. Their dedication and innovative approach have made a tangible difference, improving workplace morale and supporting colleagues in balancing their professional and personal lives.
Andrea McGuigan, a SEW group member, commented:
"We’re thrilled to receive this award and proud of the difference we’ve made. Our team is passionate about ensuring that everyone at Business Durham feels supported and valued, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see the impact of our efforts recognised."
This award reflects Business Durham’s broader commitment to creating a supportive and thriving work environment. By prioritising staff wellbeing, the organisation not only enhances productivity but also demonstrates its values in action.
Congratulations to the SEW group and all the nominees for their inspiring contributions. Together, they prove that investing in workplace wellbeing benefits everyone, fostering a healthier, happier workforce.
