As part of Business Durham’s focus on export, we met with Alan Pollitt Business Manager and Gary Clement, Manufacturing Manager of Primex Plastics Ltd.
Primex Plastics set up in Newton Aycliffe in 1998 and is part of Primex Plastics Corporation, based in Richmond, Indiana, USA. We operate 24/07 and have grown to employ over 50 staff.
Gary explained what Primex Plastics make “We are a leading extruder of thermo plastic sheeting. We specialise in technically complex plastics, the type found truck fenders, tractors, caravans and children's toys. Our flame retardant products are used in wind turbine and solar energy equipment and therefore need to be robust and weather resistant throughout the world”
In order to increase growth prospects Primex Plastics looked to export. Alan explained “Five years ago over 70% of our business was UK based and only 30% export, there were limited prospects for growth. However with investment in our people and plant Primex Plastics can deliver more technically complex products, consistently and competitively around the world. Now 70% of our business is export, of which 90% is to the European Union primarily Germany, the Nordics, and Holland, and as far as Australia and New Zealand. Over the next five years Primex Plastics aims to grow a further 30% and that is largely through export activity”
Gary’s top tip for other businesses looking to export was to “Understand your market and sector, get to know it in depth, don’t do too much too soon. Just do it!” Alan said passionately.
And Business Durham looks forward to watching Primex Plastics grow from strength to strength.
