Old Stone Vets

FROM carrying out a cow caesarean to trimming the nails of a budgie, Old Stone Vets practice is used to answering the call of animals in distress – no matter how big or small.

What their premises at the Durham Dales Centre, in Stanhope, allowed them to achieve last year was expand the business further – which means they’ve been able to treat even more animals in and around the picturesque dale.

The vets, which also has practices in Allendale, Northumberland, and Alston, Cumbria, moved into the centre just over a year ago.

The dales centre, which is run by Business Durham, the economic development company for County Durham on behalf of Durham County Council, allowed the practice to expand from its previous premises in Stanhope’s market place and create more space for the animals and their owners.

Vet Karl Collins says everything at the centre allowed a small business like theirs to thrive and grow.

“The parking and access was one of the biggest drivers for us moving,” says Karl. “For people getting out of their cars with their dogs on leads and cats in baskets it means a bit more room and security for them having off street parking.

“We already had a loyal clientele but with the dales centre being a landmark in Stanhope people know exactly where it is. We’re not a retail business as such but we were given free rein to put our own stamp on the inside. We knocked the wall down between two units and we’ve invested heavily in getting the practice just how we want it with a bigger waiting room. We created a lighter, brighter surgery.”
