Caterpillar Articulated Trucks Peterlee

Caterpillar Articulated Trucks is the market leader and the sole source of Caterpillar Articulated Trucks, manufacturing in Peterlee, County Durham, and shipping machines all around the world. With over 40 years of experience and more than 30,000 machines built and shipped, articulated trucks are used by Caterpillar customers globally, operating in construction, mining and aggregates.

Over the past eight years, Caterpillar Peterlee has built upon business improvement techniques to such an extent that a 45 ton articulated truck can be produced from flat steel plate and reach the shipping gate in under 10 days.

Since the 1970s the facility has grown to employ over 1,000 people, a testament to the quality of skilled staff, innovation and investment from Caterpillar Inc. The workforce in Peterlee is made up of a mix of professional engineers, multiple skilled trades, semi-skilled and unskilled employees with over 95% living within a 20 mile radius of the plant.

Phil Handley, Managing Director at Caterpillar Peterlee, said “The workforce at Peterlee are a proud, committed and a passionate workforce, they are willing to take on any challenge, and the skills and knowledge they bring to bear every day are key to the success of Caterpillar Peterlee across the globe.”

Caterpillar has established the Learning Centre of Light and The Welding Academy in Peterlee. Courses, qualifications and apprenticeships cover multiple trades and transferable skills from mechanical fitting, auto electricians, automotive painters, fabrication and welding through to understanding Lean Organisations, continuous improvement, management and also helping in the community with pre-employment classes. The Caterpillar Learning Centre of light is open to other businesses within the North East, attracting businesses from across the UK.

In 2009, Caterpillar teamed up with Sunderland Association Football Club's charitable arm, the Foundation of Light, to support the local community. A state-of-the-art educational centre was opened including Information Technology suite, classrooms and offices allowing thousands of local people to participate in activities, including healthy living, fitness, community, family learning and skills-based programmes. Phil Handley said “Caterpillar Peterlee is a major employer and recognises the importance of engaging young people and their families within our local community, we aim to be the first choice employer in Peterlee not just the largest.”

Caterpillar is an active member of the Peterlee Business Park Community, a local forum for businesses to engage, network and find solutions for mutual challenges.

Business Durham maintains a programme of aftercare for foreign direct investors and Caterpillar has a strong relationship with Business Durham and Durham County Council.  Business Durham has been able to support Caterpillar with funding and planning advice, as well and regional and international networks.  Phil Handley said “Caterpillar values working with local partners in their localities and knows that Business Durham is supportive of its operations. We find Business Durham to be a trusted and reliable partner to help us succeed in Peterlee.”
