Once again a local café, artisan bakery and bistro has been recognised for its outstanding quality of food and service.
Sweethart Ltd, formerly known as Sweethart Coffee and Cake in Blackhill, Consett, has recently received rave reviews from Appetite Magazine and been awarded a Quality and Local Food Champion award from Taste Durham.
Since the bakery opened in 2012, owner Mark Hart said the business had gone from strength to strength and was considered one of the leading coffee shops in the North East with people visiting from all over Europe to taste the cakes.
Mark says “Everything we have achieved at Sweethart Ltd has not been easy and we have been very lucky to have had support from various organisations, not least from Business Durham who have helped with everything from sourcing funding to providing advice on different aspects of business support.”
The business has undergone a massive transformation, moving to larger premises in 2016 and opening a bistro as a result of the expansion. They were successfully awarded a grant from the Regional Growth Fund which allowed the business to purchase much needed equipment and most importantly, grow staff numbers from 9 to 18. The additional equipment has future proofed their business so that going forward they can grow without the immediate need to purchase more equipment.
Mark added “I feel really lucky to have my business based in County Durham where Business Durham are always there to lend support “.
Andrea McGuigan, Business Development Manager (North) said "Mark has proved that accessing the right funding and working with the relevant support organisations, has certainly enabled him to expand his business and realise his dreams. We wish him every success and will continue to provide our support when needed."
