Durham, a Great Place to Live

County Durham stretches from the East Coast to the Pennines and from the River Tyne to the River Tees. A third of North East England is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and we have something for everyone – from windswept beaches to historic forests.

County Durham has a wide range of housing options to suit most people and you get a great deal for your money. In June 2013, the average price for a detached house was £188,665 in the county compared to £329,600 in England.

County Durham is a safe and secure place to live and work. In the year to June 2014, Total Recordable Crime in the county was 84% of that for England and Wales as a whole.

The county has great schools too: the percentage of students achieving five or more A* - C grades is 63%, which is better than the English average of 59%.

There are a huge variety of things to see and do, with the county steeped in history and culture. We have medieval castles such as Raby; High Force, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in England; Bowes Museum, a French chateau in the heart of the county, and of course, the World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral and Castle.Beamish, the Living Museum of the North, features one of the most important collections of social history in the world and is a great, interactive family day out.

Further afield, you can visit the ancient site of Lindisfarne; Alnwick Castle and Gardens; Hadrian’s Wall; a Norman Foster designed concert hall complex in the Sage Gateshead; and the Angel of the North. Newcastle is often voted in the top five party cities in the world, and there is no shortage of sport in the North East: Premier League football, Premiership Rugby Union, International Cricket, countless golf courses, riding, cycling and tennis. For shopaholics, Durham City has a plethora of independent shops and the Metro Centre, Gateshead, one of Europe’s largest shopping centres is less than 30 minutes away.
