Businesses flock to flagship Salvus House

A flagship £3.4m Durham City office space and business incubator unit is celebrating attracting growing and industry leading businesses to its bespoke accommodation.

Just six months after it opened, Salvus House at Aykley Heads is now home to firms in the engineering, communications and digital design industries.

Salvus House is a multi-award winning office building acquired by Business Durham on behalf of Durham County Council, with incubation and office space immediately available for lease from 3,000 to 9,000 sq ft, for one to 90 people.

Its office accommodation has been hailed by its new tenants for meeting their design requirements and infrastructure needs, with superb connectivity to national and international clients by road, rail and air.

The incubation space is a partnership between Durham County Council, Durham University and New College Durham to support new and established businesses who wish to locate to Durham City.

The new tenants are:

  • Building Design (Northern) Ltd – with over 35 years’ excellence in structural engineering and project management, its new office space is home to a highly experienced team of ten comprising chartered architects, project managers, chartered engineers and support staff.
  • Growing writing and editing company Concision was the first tenant to move into Salvus House. The family owned firm has grown rapidly to a team of eight, working with clients across the UK, Europe and the United States.
  • Consulting engineers TGA, who have been providing mechanical & electrical consultancy services in Durham for 55 years, is working with an impressive portfolio of clients including the British Museum, Hitachi Rail Europe and Durham Cathedral from its new office space in Salvus House.
  • Digital design firm Discovery Design is enjoying 80% more office space since its move into Salvus House to service its growing list of clients, who call on its 18 years’ experience in the highly competitive web development industry.

TGA director Jason Jobes said: “The team at Business Durham was very flexible in their approach to getting us the specification of accommodation required, with Salvus House being perfectly suited for our needs. Another key decision factor for us in our move was its connectivity. We are well connected to our Stevenage office by rail from Durham, and it’s only a short walk to our Newcastle and London offices from Newcastle Central Station and King’s Cross.”

Building Design (Northern) managing director Clive Oliphant said: “As a company that designs buildings, it is important for us to be based in a building which is appropriate to showcase what we do. Salvus House is a good base for us. As a location for business, we are based on the East Coast Mainline and clients are impressed by what they see here.”

Concision CEO Daniel Roe said: “Since moving into Salvus House, we have seized significant opportunities as consultants helping businesses think about how they communicate themselves not just through writing but also through strategy. We're glad to be based at Salvus House. The people who work for us are all writers first and foremost, and expanding our team is an important part of delivering value to our clients.”

Discovery Design managing director James Addison said: “Moving into Salvus House is a great opportunity for us as we wanted to be in the centre of Durham which is the best possible location for us, being central in the North East between Newcastle and Tees Valley. Salvus House is perfect for us. It gives us 80% more office space for us to grow. The Business Durham staff have been great with us – we wanted to move as quickly as possible which they were only too happy to accommodate.”

Councillor Carl Marshall, the newly elected Durham County Council Cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: “The location has proved popular with businesses due to its close proximity to Durham rail station and we are pleased that it is already playing a key role in bringing investment and more jobs to the region.

“We are now looking forward to seeing more companies come to Salvus House and flourish in their new environment.”

Simon Goon, Business Durham managing director, said: “Salvus House is already establishing a reputation as the location of choice for new and established businesses seeking the highest quality office accommodation in the North East with superb connectivity and infrastructure.”
