Hydram is a privately owned sheet metal fabrication company based in Chilton established 40 years ago. It now employs over 230 employees and is recognised as one of the UK's leading subcontract precision sheet metal fabrication companies.
Its success has been built upon its culture of quality and continuous improvement, an impressive client base, its people and progressive investment.
Frustrated that training providers were unable to provide comprehensive training modules suitable for the sheet metal fabrication industry, Hydram has invested in its own training division, recruiting Neil Mawson as Training Manager. Neil says “In the past four years Hydram has developed a full apprenticeship covering nine learning modules, from which apprentices may proceed onto degree level engineering and careers in sales, design, engineering, tooling, quality assurance or procurement. Last year we had 400 applicants for 8 apprenticeship positions, and our apprentices have been nominated for national apprenticeship competitions. Hydram is developing a quality workforce to meet the needs of 21st century global manufacturing.”
Hydram has just completed a £2.5 million investment project which included new fiber lasers and punching machines with material storage and automated loading and unloading systems. Stephen Beacham Operations Manager said “ As a leading UK metal sheet fabrication company our customers have high expectations requiring quality assured solutions. Hydram’s programme of capital investment ensures we are at the top of our game to meet customer expectations.”
Thanks to early introductions between Business Durham, Hydram, and Hitachi Rail Europe in 2012, Hydram will be supplying metal assemblies for the carriage interiors directly to the new Hitachi Rail Vehicle Manufacturing Facility in Newton Aycliffe, just 6 miles from Hydram’s facility.
David Greatorex, Hydram’s Managing Director, commented, “We are extremely excited about partnering with Hitachi Rail on this new project. We have been speaking with them since 2012 and to secure a significant contract is great news for the business and employees. It was thanks to our long term relationship with Business Durham that helped us to showcase our capabilities to Hitachi Rail Europe”
