A GAP in the market for electrical safety services has seen two experienced electricians set up in business together.

Martin Hurton and Richard Leckenby formed Safety Checked ltd to provide electrical inspection and testing services to housing associations, councils, private companies and landlords throughout the region.

The pair, whose clients already include Durham-based Esh Group and national housing trust The Guinness Partnership, have seen a month-on-month increase in customers since starting six months ago and expect to recruit in the near future to cope with demand.

Mr Hurton, 39, from Newton Hall, Durham, said demand for safety services, fire alarm checks, portable appliance testing (PAT) and maintenance was high.

“We both recognised a real gap in the market for a branded, reliable company offering these services. In time, we hope to have a well-recognised, trusted brand with a fleet of electricians operating throughout the region.”

With support from Business Durham, the economic development organisation for County Durham, Safety Checked recently moved its head office to the Tanfield Lea Business Centre, in Stanley.

“Business Durham helped us find a location that suits our needs, budget and customer base. This move enables us to provide a more efficient service for our current customers and gives us the room to expand our business in the future,” said Mr Leckenby, from Lanchester.

Brian Archer, Business Durham’s managing director, said: “Safety Checked only started trading in July but has hit the ground running, with a good pool of clients already keeping them busy. Its move to Tanfield Lea Business Centre ensures the company is perfectly placed to service its fast-growing customer base in the North East.”
