Caterpillar Articulated Trucks is the market leader and the sole source of Caterpillar Articulated Trucks, manufacturing in Peterlee, County Durham, and shipping machines all around the world. With over 40 years of experience and more than 30,000 machines built and shipped, articulated trucks are used by Caterpillar customers globally, operating in construction, mining and aggregates.
Over the past eight years, Caterpillar Peterlee has built upon business improvement techniques to such an extent that a 45 ton articulated truck can be produced from flat steel plate and reach the shipping gate in under 10 days.
Since the 1970s the facility has grown to employ over 1,000 people, a testament to the quality of skilled staff, innovation and investment from Caterpillar Inc. The workforce in Peterlee is made up of a mix of professional engineers, multiple skilled trades, semi-skilled and unskilled employees with over 95% living within a 20 mile radius of the plant.

Caterpillar has established the Learning Centre of Light and The Welding Academy in Peterlee. Courses, qualifications and apprenticeships cover multiple trades and transferable skills from mechanical fitting, auto electricians, automotive painters, fabrication and welding through to understanding Lean Organisations, continuous improvement, management and also helping in the community with pre-employment classes. The Caterpillar Learning Centre of light is open to other businesses within the North East, attracting businesses from across the UK.
In 2009, Caterpillar teamed up with Sunderland Association Football Club's charitable arm, the Foundation of Light, to support the local community. A state-of-the-art educational centre was opened including Information Technology suite, classrooms and offices allowing thousands of local people to participate in activities, including healthy living, fitness, community, family learning and skills-based programmes. Caterpillar is an active member of the Peterlee Business Park Community, a local forum for businesses to engage, network and find solutions for mutual challenges.
